Book 4

After an initial introduction (4:1 – 5), an attack on idolatry and temples paired with a celebration of the righteous (4:6 – 39), and a declaration of final judgment (4:40 – 48), the fourth sibyl prophesies the rise and fall of a series of kingdoms and generations. The sibyl describes Assyria, Media, Persia, and Macedonia (4:49 – 101), and then turns her attention to Rome (4:102 – 151). After this, the sibyl declares that there will be a final conflagration, issuing a call to repent (4:152 – 178). The conflagration will be followed by a resurrection and judgment (4:179 – 192).

The sibyl’s framing of time into generations and kingdoms here has interested scholars, both in discussions about the four-kingdoms motif20 and in debates about the redactional layers of the book.21 Twice in the material leading up to the list of kingdoms, the sibyl names a period characterized by ten generations. The first occurrence can be found at 4:20, where the sibyl describes the god who inspires her:
